Default Suspension guru's: Long travel or standard travel

I have a 400EX that I do not race, mostly trails and such although I'm not afraid to get some air.

Is it beneficial to have the long travel over the standard travel or should I just buy some quality front shocks and get my rear one redone?

Just curious what you guys think that have made adjustments to yours and how you are pleased/not pleased with the results and/or what you would've done different.

Thanks

Well in order to fit long travel shocks you are gonna need to buy long travel a-arms. And that costs big $$$. I race my R in MX and XC and it is hard to bottom it with my Ohlins and they aren't long travel.

After spending 2k on long travel front shocks you think another 600 is a lot of money for new a arms?

For the terrain you described the costs will far outweigh the benefits, I'd go with std travel. But if you have the money to burn, there could be an instance or two where you'll feel a difference.

Thanks guys. I was just kinda thinking to myself and as I get older, I like a smooth ride. Just kinda curious if the added travel would be worth messing with or not (I knew I'd need different arms) I'm fixing to replace the front shocks anyway and thought I'd ask before I purchased and decided to go the other route

I don't mind buying quality but I'm not going to throw money out the window. It's going to have to almost repay me back before I just dump money on a product regardless what it is.
