Important 400EX Mods for MX?
#11
well I kinda agree with surfer400ex..... you don't have to had ALL those mods to ride fast and win races. I've won races and mine only has a few mods..... but anyways for the buck Works triple rates with reservoirs are good..... for around 400-450, then get some those Krypton a-arms for 475, have your stock rear shock revalved to match the fronts, and a durablue axle.......that would be the cheapset way and I don't think you would be disapointed at all.

My stock fronts are on their last leg. That is why I'm asking about getting new ones. Would the Works Triple Rates w/ res. and Krypton a-arms be sufficient? How do the shocks compare to new stocks? A slight difference? Or an immense difference?
I am not looking for "top-of-the-line" stuff. I just need a good "middle-of-the-road" setup that won't set me back a lot of $. Will I be happy with this front end? Or do you all have any other suggestions? Thanks.

Nac's Racing has TCS fronts which are standard finish & travel for $650. They also have PEP Race front shocks for $595. Which would be the better choice? Would the PEP be good enough? Or should I go ahead and pay the extra $55 for the TCS? Also, would I have to get a new rear or have my stocker re-done since the fronts are ZPS? Somebody please help. Thanks in advance for your help.

you'll se a differrence... As for which shock you want you can always get the peps or works then get them converted by TCS at a later date to ZPS with cans... check out www.ctracing.com they have all the prices for TCS they are also located in the sma building... YOu can always call there and ask to talk to Todd, the guy who owns TCS (i think) and he will let you know what is up.

Will I have to get a new rear if I get the TCS with ZPS? I was wondering if there would be any problem with the ZPS in the front and the preload in the rear. Also, does anyone suggest a-arms if I get the TCS? Thanks in advance.

I have the TCS and they are wonderful as I mentioned earlier. I also got a set of works triple rates off a friend REAL cheap as backup shocks, I have had them on, and they are ok as well. The only difference really is that they sit higher than the TCS. Neither bottom out.
As for the PEP race shocks that are 595 from Nacs, they are not zero preload, and I belive not adjustable for compression either? However, the TCS have gone up in price and are now 750 even though it says 650 in the magazine. So it depends if you want to spend almost 200 for a zero preload setup. If you dont feel you need ZPS, I would recommend the works triple rates with res over the PEP's just because they are cheaper. I dont know which is necessarily better, or even if one is better. I think you are paying for the name as far as PEP goes with those shocks.
If you want a MX bike, get the A-arms with your shocks, it provides a way better ride through whoops and such, just be aware that it makes it harder to squeeze through tight spots in the woods with them. So, it depends what you want it for. You can always put the stock A-arms and shocks back on as well.
As far as the question about how much improvement over stock's, well to purchase new stock shocks from a dealer would be near as much, or as much as a set of works, and the works are MUCH better than stock shocks. A world of difference if you ask me. They make your ride better everywhere, from cruising across the yard to the biggest MX triples.
Good luck

The Krypton arms are sweet. I just wish they had grease zerks, other than that, they are just like any other aftermarket arms, but at a much cheaper price.
I would personally get the works and the a-arms if that is your choice, instead of gettin more expensive shocks and no a-arms. The extended width really helps in the whoops!
