Pulling the top end off a 1991 250x
#1
Hi everyone. With all the help, I finally got my quad running well and took it riding yesterday. Figured there were going to be some bugs to work out and unfortunately I was more correct that I had hoped. First my swing arm had some hairline cracks in it that decided to completely seperate, not too bad, will need to replace the swingarm. Runs really strong , but it was the first time I had taken it out. After checking the oil I took off down some trails and started to hear some ticking. Checked the oil and it was now about halfway low. Started looking through the top end of the engine and realized that 5 of the bolts just spun in place, completely stripped which was causing quite a leak all the way around. I pulled the valve cover off(I think thats what its called) and everything looks clean. I know I have to pull the head and rethread the stripped holes, also there was no gasket here which I have to replace. My question is this. The timing chain is on the timing gear on the cam. To remove this so I can remove the head, Im assuming there is a tension unit that would have to be undone, followed by removing the two bolts holding on the timing gear and then pulling the head. I have already removed the 4 nuts that look almost like lugnuts and it looks like that is all that is holding it in place now. Any and all information would be extremely helpful! Thanks in advance.

There is also 2 little bolts at the bottom of the jug that will need to come out in order to remove the jug. There is no valve cover gasket, you will need to use gasket sealer, "very lightly". The timming chain tens is located on the back side of the jug, held in place with 2 small bolts. Take the oil tube loose at the crankcase and let it come off with the head. I would say that if those bolts were stripped then it happend when someone else rebuilt it or at least tried to. I would buy yourself a manual because it will make things alot easier for you. Make sure you draw out a map of where the bolts come out of the rocker cover because they are diff lengths. While apart look everything over very closely because if something needs replaced now is the time to do it. Deff measure the wrist pin for wear, and pull the valves and check for wear at the seat, check for wear on the valve locks where they wrap around the valve and see if it looks like the valve is pulling up through the locks. These are also called valve cotter's per honda. Look at the rockers where they ride on the cam, they should be smooth and shinny like chrome. All in all just look it over real good and make sure everything is good to go. RUSS
