brake drum wont come off...
I'm trying to replace the rear brake shoes on my 86' 250 trx and i cant get the friggin brake drum off the axle. I dont see anything holding it in place other than the fact that it's been on there for 20 years. I tried using a puller with some chain, which didnt work, so i took the whole axle out and tryed to put it on the press which didnt work wither. I dont see how this thing is still hanging on, so any help would be very appreciated!

Assuming your doing everything right like removed the tire, removed hub cotterpin and lock nut, removed hub, removed the 16 little bolts on the black rear drum shell, nothing is left but the rear drum with nothing holding it so you should be able to tap it with a rubber hammer and slide it off. There is also a little inspection bolt on the underside of the drum and if you remove that then normally water and crud would come out. Try leaving that out as you could also be fighting a vacuume but I think you are doing 1 of 2 things wrong, your either trying to remove the entire brake drum at once and you cant do that or you have the black case with the 6 bolts still into the drum.

Everything is removed from the brake assembly including every bolt, except for the actual brake drum the shoes press against and the plate the shoes are mounted to . Actually, i pulled the axle out of the axle tube with the drum and plate attached in order to put it on the press. Thanks for the replies !!!!

Make sure the adjusters (wing nuts) are backed all the way off, and tap the lever that the cables pull on back as far as it will go. Likely the pads have worn a ridge in the drum so the shoes have to be ALL THE WAY in so they dont catch the ridge when taking the drum off.
Other then that I've used a prybar (gently) while hitting the drum with a hammer...the vibrations move the drum because your applying pressure with the prybar. If you have a buddy, you can use 2 prybars 180 degrees apart along with the hammer to speed up the process.

Just letting yall know that the SOB is finally off! I tryed prybars, pullers, beating, all the traditional methods without any success. I finally just took the axle with the brake drum still hung on it to a machine shop and he put it on his 68 ton press and got it off without much trouble...
