Well i've been a 2 stroke fan my whole life. but i'll have to say i own a 250R and have ridden the 450s. i'dd trade my 250 for a 450 anyday.
you won't have to rebuild the 4 stroke neer as much and nowa days they run as good some better then a 2 stroke. you don't have to mix gas and oil. you have a 300ex well when you step UP to a 450 then you'll know right then how smooth they are for trails. and damn fast. the 250's have no low end torque for trail riding you have to rap them out and burn the clutch alot more.
as for racing... watch TV what are 98% of the peopel riding.? 4 stroke hondas....
the yamaha has reverse i think. honda does not. both have electric start models i think...
there is my $.02

The reason 98% of people are racing 4 strokes are many.... Not because they are better machines either.
Don't you think it would look bad if the majority of racers were riding 19 year old technology.... AND WINNING!?!?!?

Today's high performance 4-strokes do require as much maintnance as 2-strokes. And the yfz450's do not have reverse.
And while it is true that factories aren't going to back machine's that are not in production anymore, it's also true the 450's do have an advantage. While a race ready 250R and 450R maybe putting out simular HP numbers, the power spread of the 450 is much broader.
Same thing with dirtbikes, I love my CR250, but when I get my finances straight, Im going to have to add a 450 to my stable and the CR250 will have to be a back-up bike.

From my experience, I would get the 450R. I own an 86 TRX250R and 85 ATC250R and wouldn't trade them for anything, but it can be a constant challenge to keep the old machines going like new. Coming from a 300EX, I'd be willing to say you won't be comfortable with frequent jetting adjustments, not to mention rebuilds and tuning.
As long as you keep it relativley stock, the 450 will be as reliable as your 300, but faster, better suspended and more predictable. For the type of riding I do (playing/dragging in the dunes and very limited fast trails), I will never sell my 250R, but the ease of riding and fewer mechanical headaches make the newer, more predictable machine very appealing. Then again, nothing feels like a 250R...

the 250s have no low end torque for trail riding, you have to rap them out and clutch alot more. yeah ok!! did you EVER ride a properly tuned and jetted 250 2 stroker ? my powerband comes on almost immediately if you are in the correct gear. the only time i have to slip the clutch is to go over LOGS !! as for racing ,you are probably better off on something thats got a smoother power delivery(less spin).
I have the priveledge of having both. i can tell you that i like the engine, shocks (the rear needs alittle help), frame, technology of the the 450R. what i do NOT like is that it does not have the 'rider-machine' connection that the 250R has and it simply is not as balanced and will get squirelly at high speeds. do i like the 450R. YES! better than the 250R? No! but considering like someone else pointed out - you can get a newer bike WITH a warranty- go for it. The 450R will not dissappoint you especially coming from a 300EX - just dont diss a 250R without knowing the truth of both and how they relate to each other. a properly tuned one is a masterpeice in motion.
oh and by the way, the 450R manual doesnt call for 'frequent' rebuilds. you do HAVE to change the oil more frequently and if you are in competition every week like the pros are, then you want a fresh engine -hence more rebuilds- but if you are the rider like most everyone else on here, i really dont think you will ever rebuild it. you will sell it before that happens. or until you modify it for more power.
