Tips for cold starting 2001 400ex
I have a 2001 400ex. Ive been trying to start it for the past few days but it has not started. I live on Long island, and its about 20-30 degrees here during the winter. When i try to start it, it starts for about 1 second and it stalls. I cleaned the spark plug becuase it was full of carbon. Should i change it, or is it just becuase its cold? What i also did is, i put the heater in the garage and I let the garage heat up for about a half an hour. Still the same.

It couldn't hurt to change the plug, but all ex's are a pain to start in the cold. I've owned two of them, and what has always worked for me is pumping the gas 2-3 times before attempting to start it. The once it hits give it a little throttle and just keep it revved a little until it gets warm enough on it's own.

if you change the pilot jet to a #40 or #42 it will help alot with cold starts. I run a #40 and haven't used the choke in over two years... starts great every time [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

Tips for cold starting 2001 400ex
All my thumpers but my KTM require the same cold weather starting drill. Full choke, turn the idle screw up 1/2 of as turn and kick. Drop choke to intermediate level and let warm up for about 5 minutes. Then lower idle back to normal. Any less of a warm up and they will buck, cough and die.
