Amsoil's new ATV/Motercycle oil
#21
Hi.
I would have to agree that Amsoil is a great brand.
As far as Synth vs Standard. I find it depends on the machine. I found that castrol & mobil synthetic worked terrible in my smaller air cooled kawasaki atvs. Over heated in a few minutes.
Although Kawasaki air cooled atvs have a unique oil flow system. I went back to standard 5w30 and no more overheat problems.

You will not have a problem with the motor running automotive oil in a quad or motorcycle BUT, where you will have problems is the clutch. If you have a quad like the 400EX where the motor and transmission share oil this is where you have the problem. Automotive oil has "anti friction modifiers" and these will cause the clutches to wear out prematurely because of the excess heat. And I know I will have 10 guys tell me that's a bunch of crap they have worked in my ....... forever. Well after twenty years of fixing thousands of quads I see patterns and one of those patterns is people who swear by automotive oil spend more money on clutches. End Of Rant
Not to knock Amsoil fellows, but I've been using regular old Castrol 20W50 ($15/case at Walmart) in my 400EX for two years straight now and have experienced no problems at all. And my machine gets abused more than most - racing regularly in 2+ hour hare scrambles and GNCC's.
In fact, this last week I took apart the top end of my engine to put in a new 87mm JE piston and I noticed that my cam and rockers were all in nearly perfect condition - almost no wear signs at all.
Now I would imagine that you can go for a bit longer without changing the Amsoil, but I can't imagine it doing a better job of protecting my engine and I just can't justify the cost at almost exactly 5 TIMES that of my trusty Castrol.
I don't mean to incite a major argument here but I did just want to state my opinion on the matter.

Dennis

Wow, a 10 year old thread- im pretty sure thats a record as the link doesnt even work anymore. Im still useing the amsoil and everything of mine still runs perfectly- even the same rings in my 2 strokes. ALthough Specta has a great point, its expensive and if i rode as much as he does i woulldnt use it in my rubicon either! 30+ quarts a year would put me in the poor house and the dyno oil changed often is perfetly fine.
