the clicking noise: that may be normal, because every time i hear an atv with a chain it does that.
the axle: maybe the axle bearings are about gone.

I just had my bearings go out (they were 7 years old, so I got my moneys worth out of them). My first symptom was that clicking sound, and the second was that the chain went slack all of a sudden (because of play in the axle).

Best advice is to NOT RIDE THE QUAD until you have it diagnosed. Take my advice, and replace the bearings before the carrier and axle get totally ruined! I toasted mine and it cost me $700 to fix the damage (for replacements I went with an Lonestar 4 bearing carrier and DuraBlue axle). If you act before everything gets ruined, new bearings might run you a small fraction of that, as long as the carrier and axle are fine!

Sounds like your bearings in the carrier. ANother way to figure it out, is to put the bike on the 4 wheels, and stand on the pegs, wobble the bike back and forth slowly. If it wobbles with you then they are most likely out. Or maybe just aloose carrier, check the 4 bolts on the swingarm where the carrier is.

If they were replaced recently, I wouldn't take that to mean anything. One source I know says bearings need to be replaced every year as part of routine maintenance anyway.

If you have been in a lot of dirty water, or other conditions that are detrimental to long bearing life, it may be time.........

I have been around a lot of 300ex's and 400ex's, and I have noticed that once the rear bearing carrier gets a little damaged, it tends to eat up the bearings really quick. On my old 400ex, it had a bad bearing carrier, and it would eat up a new set of bearings in just a couple rides.

If you have play for whatever reason it will be bad on the bearings and you should replace them or like others have said they will go bad and it could be very costly. bearings and seals ar fairly inexpensive.
