CRF450X Transmission Failures???
Seeing that the 06 450R has basically the same engine/trans as the X, you 06 owners might want to consider this.........
There have been a few 450X transmission lock ups. There is some discussion that if the oil level in the trans is even slightly low, it can cause a transmission failure!
Word is that you need to run an extra 200cc's (above the weep hole) of oil in
your X transmission! The gears ride above the oil line and are not totally
submerged in oil, so they are lubed only by the oil they carry up with them. This is
designed to cause the least amount of drag, but can cause a disaster if you are
even slightly low on oil. The shaft is also lubed by splashing, so a little
extra oil doesn't hurt here either.

From what I gather, the problem has mostly been from people dual sporting their X's and running long, straight, smooth surfaces, where the engine doesn't "bounce around" and provide oil to the upper end of the transmission. I guess some quad riders ride like this, but most of them ride rough terrain. The problem probably won't arise as much on the quads, but I would definitely add the extra oil just for insurance.
Like was said on the TT forum. Honda should issue a bulletin telling people to run the extra bit of oil.

CRF450X Transmission Failures???
Mine has a slight whine as I let out the clutch on a DOWNSHIFT. Sounds like it could be a bearing, but it might just be the plates coming back together. I had been running 85W Maxima MTL in the transmission, which is supposed to be the same as about 30W engine oil, but MTL seemed awful thick! I called Maxima, and they suggested I switch to their Extra, ester synthetic oil in the trans. This was an easy one, because Extra is what I run in the engine side.
I have the extended warranty, so if its a bearing it won't be a disaster financially.
