How much an hour does your dealer charge. How much is the average rebuild?

The top end on the rancher is simple to rebuild but and you need no special tools but you also say you have developed a ticking that could be valves or timing chain and if it is timing chain you are in for a healthy job since you will have to have a puller to get the flywheel off and if i remember correctly to even get to it you have to pull the motor from the frame. Good luck.

when does it smoke??? under load or on hard deceleration?

under load means rings, deceleration is worn valve guides and seals.

i would do a compression test, record the pressure, then put a tablespoon of oil down the spark plug hole, then do it again, and if the pressure rises considerably, then the rings are bad. if NOT, then the valve seals and valve guides are probably bad.

You need to pull the pull rope cover off and check and see if you got mud in there and took out the seal.
Getting mud and junk into your motor from this seal going bad will toast a motor........just rebuilding the top end may not be enough.
