Default 97 honda 300 ex question

I was just wondering if I could use regular 10/40 motor oil when changing the oil.
If not, whats the difference between regular 10/40 motor oil and honda 10/40 oil?
If I would use regular 10/40 motor oil would it hurt anything? like maybe the wet clutch?

Thanks for any info

Stay away from automotive oils. They contain anti-friction additives that can make your clutch slip. The oil in your car only lubricates the engine. On most atvs, yours included, the oil lubes the clutch, tranny and engine. ATV oils have additives to keep the oil from breaking down when lubing the tranny, something that auto oils don't have. Atv oil is 2 - 3 times more money but worth it for what demands an atv engine puts on the oil that lubricates it.
