06 450R
Just picked up a new 06 450R last friday. i was wonderin what everyone else's motor sounds like. i used to have a 400ex and it just sat there and ran quiet and idled quietly also. but the new 450 doesn't do that. i don't know if that is just becuase of the high compression or maybe there is something wrong with my motor. i don't know how to explain the sound. it has done it ever since i picked it up at the dealer. i had someone tell me it sounds like the pistion is hitting something. But it runs good and the power is right there when i tap the throttle what do you guys think? Also, when everyone says that it can beat a raptor it depends on how long the drag is. i raced one today and i beat the rappy till we hit top speed.

My 05 sounds the same way and so does my friends 04. I never noticed mine till one day when i was riding without a helmet(which I advise against) so the best way i can tell you to fix it if it bothers you is to buy a good helmet, then you won't hear it. I think it has alot to do with the high compression and the high gearing. Mine seems to go away when you rap the motor out and get worse when you are lugging. The best thing I did for mine was uncorking the stock exhaust by taking the baffle out. it really helped it out for low end lugging in the trails.

The '06 450r motor makes alot more noise than the 04/05 models and sounds much different than a 400ex. The 06 trx450r sounds more similar to the crf450 dirt bike. If nothing sounds wrong when you hit the gas then you most likely fine. Alot of people have mentioned this that are unfamiliar with the dirt bike motor. I had a 05 and my 06 sounds much more "clanky." Simply stated the design of the '06 motor is more similar to the dirt bike (which has in the area of 50-55 crank horse.) After a day of riding I never though about it since.
Also, was the raptor a 660 or a 700 and was it modified at all? With a few basic mods to your '06 you probably won't see the raptor until you turn around. That's unless it's heavily modded.

I have an 04 450r with Hotcam stage II, FMF Q2 slip on, Uni filter and cut open airbox lid.
I have beaten nearly all Raptor 660R's I have raced (drag) and I beat a stock 700R and lost to a modded 700R.
The 450R is quicker than the Raptors but has less top end speed. IMO
I would normally get passed in 5th gear by most of the Raptors I've raced.
I have also geared mine lower with a 13t front sprocket.
