Default TRX 300 starting in gear

I have just replaced the ignition switch on my 93 TRX 300 and now the starter will engage when it is in gear! Before I replaced the switch it would only engage in netural! The bike does'nt seem to start unless it's in netural but it will jerk ahead or back a bit! Anyideas what might have happened?

terms-

ICM= ignition control module, which decides wether or not to let your ride start, and talks to the ignition coil, pulse generator, and reverse switch.

Reverse inhibitor= Makes your quad go slow while in reverse so you don't die.

Here's how the starter safety system works. (I have the Clymer's wiring diagram right in front of me) According to this diagram, the ICM pays no attention to what gear the quad is in, so long as it's not reverse (The reverse switch ties in to the ICM, but the neutral switch only goes to the reverse inhibitor and the indicator light) If there is a problem in there and the switch thinks it's always pressed (possibly a short somewhere in between the switch and the ICM) it shouldn't affect what gear the quad likes to start in. I tend to suspect your clutch switch because it's nearest to the area you tampered with, and maybe a wire got pulled loose, considering the ignition switch and the clutch switch probably tie into the same harness. If that was the case, even if your clutch wasn't pulled, the ATV would start, essentially driving you with the power of the starter motor. Try starting it in reverse to help narrow down the problem, and check that clutch switch wiring and calibration.

Ah. Crap. So much for my perfect explination. Lets try this again. It's probably the neutral switch. Thats probably on the side of your tranny, and it tells the abovementioned ICM wether or not its okay to fire up.

It's possible that the wiring harnesses run together, and tampering with the ignition switch made a wire come loose, causing your ICM to think it's always in neutral. I DON'T suspect that a random part went bad for no reason. Sure would be handy in mud puddles though. I saw a jeep CJ5 stall in a bog and climb out with the starter motor. Where is the ICM? Is it in the area where the ignition switch wires are? I know that there was'nt very much room to get those wires plugged in so I might have knocked something off! PS: I can't afford $40 bucks for a Clymers right now!

What does the clutch have anything to do w/ the starter engaging?
