Miy 2001 Rubicon did the same thing the other day. It was in gear. Even the gear indicator said it was neutral but I had to move the atv back and forth to disengage the gear.
Exactly the same symptoms.

yah i have had the same thing but the dash would blick. But on the needle in the carb if you lower the clip on the needle one position which raise the needle out of the seat it will make it richer and easier to start in cold weather, switch for summer no use wasteing that cheap 2.75 gas .

 

My 2003 and my 2005 do it if I do a lot of slow riding and a lot of stop and restarts it will drain the batery and it wont recharge very good. so some times when I get dune with plowing the drive way and have used the winch a lot or a lot of restarts I will run it up and down the road a couple of miles full speed and I wont have any problems the next time I go to ride it. I also have a 2005 recon that is the same way it just gets low from driving around the yard to pick up sticks and a lot of restarts and then it cant keep up with recharge I some times put them on a tricle charger over night works great. I also have three young kids that try to start them but all they get done is turning the lights on and leaving the key on that dont help ether LOL. Good Luck
