Default Shift sensor problem

I have a 01 Recon ES 250 and the 1st gear light is flashing 8 times and will not shift with the ES. I know its flashing a code but the dealer will not tell me what. The Clymer manuel is no help either. What is the best way to fix this or just bypass it? Thankx for any help.

a code 8 is the angle sensor system

it could be the angle sensor, wiring, shift motor or ECM. I know some of those earlier year had some issues with the sensor going bad, if you want to throw a part at it, a new sensor is 40-50 $.

Make sure the connections are clean and tight at the sensor, motor and ecm, put electrical grease on the connections to keep them from corroding. Use a ohm-meter to check the continuity of the wires, and check for any shorts to power or ground. If the wiring is ok, then you'll have a bad component somewhere.

They won't tell you what the code means? Is this some top secret code that customers can't know about? What's the big deal, do they expect people to say "Ok, I'll pay you guys to look at it for me because you won't tell me what the code means." We tell customers pretty much everything they want to know about fixing stuff theirselves, including photocopying a few pages from the service manual if they want. At least that way they are more likely to buy the parts from us than to go somewhere else because we wouldn't push them in the right direction when they asked a few questions.

yes i would check with another dealer, sounds like they just want to fix it theirselves and get your money ,there are some good dealers and there's some bad one's out there. when i had a honda my local dealer was the same way about giving out free info. i let them work on mine just one time and they charged me almost 300.00 for a part that only cost 10 bucks the rest was labor. oh and they told me that they did a full service and tune up, oil change brake adjustment, replaced a CV joint and a rear axle bearing and a cleanup. when i got it home i checked the parts they said they replaced they only steam cleaned the quad to make it look like they replaced the parts the brakes held out a few day's then i had to bleed them myself the get them right. plus when i got it back i saw oil in my truck bed when i unloaded it i thought it strange and checked the oil drain it was wet i tryed tighting the plug only to find it was stripped. I was mad as a hornet took it back and was told it was fine when it left the shop, said i must have stripped it when i tried to tighten it myself. dealer said they would have to weld the drain hole and retread it for $250.00, i said no thanks !! I had to go to an idustrial bearing shop where i bought a heli - coil tread kit for about $50.00 with extra cost for a drill bit and did the job myself. I got a lawyer who got every penney i payed the dealer and costs for the heli - coil kit and punitive damages . It cost the dealer over $2000.00 allogether for their screw-up, needless to say but i found a new dealer for part's and do my own labor now good luck with your problem williebee.

I am having the same problem with one of my Ranchers. Flashes 12 times for me (Bad ECU) I pulled the supposedly bad ECU off mine put it on my wife's and it works great. Stick with the angle sensor and be glad you are even getting the right error code. After weeks of playing with mine I found I have a broke wire between the angle sensor and the ECU. Half way there it enters the primary wiring housing and then into the ECU. I don't want to tear into that myself so I am just going to take it to the shop. But if I didn't know what was wrong with it already I know it would have cost me a fortune in Labor.
