02' Rancher got stuck in nuetral-WHY???
#1
After about an hour ride yesterday, I pulled back in dropped it in neutral and shut her down. I then started her up and went to put it in 1st gear and nothing happened. I then tried reverse gear and nothing happened. I let her cool down and tried it again and again but no luck.
I then winched it up into the trailer for the ride home and then rolled her off the trailer, started it up and then she went into gear just fine!
Has this happened to anyone else and is this something I should take to the mechanic to look into??

Ok, ForemanDan has a good idea, but the rocking only works for when you are in gear and cant get it into neutral. But your problem is that you are in neutral but it wont shift into gear?
The first thing i would do is the clutch adjustment. With the machine cool and the engine off, find the locknut and screw on the front of the engine, more so to the left side. It's a 14mm nut with a slotted screw in the center. Loosen the nut with a wrench while holding the screw part with a screwdriver. then turn the screw clockwise a turn or so, then turn it counterclockwise until you feel some resistance. the screw should turn with no force at all until you hit the resistance point. When you hit this point, go back the other way 1/4 turn. hold the screw here and snug the nut with the wrench. What you are doing here is bringing the disengagement mechanism for the gearshift clutch right up to the cluch assembly, then going out a 1/4 puts a tad bit of slack in there to allow for heat expansion and to make sure the clutch disengages correctly when under operating conditions.
Now, if that doesnt work, we will need to know if it's an ES or a foot shifter model. If it's a foot shifter model, you'll have to get a mechanic to look at it since you most likely have a mechanical problem
If it's an ES, you might have some crud in your shift switches or a bad shift motor, bad battery, etc.

Thanks guys.
Quick silver, it's a 5 speed foot shifter. Sorry, forgot to add that to the original post. I'll try the clutch adjustment and see what happens.
Thanks for the tip.
