Hi Everyone, I am wondering if different manufacturers measure ground clearanche differently. I bought a new Rincon yesterday and my big concern buying it was that the ground clearance (10" according to Honda) was quite a bit less than the 12" claimed by Yamaha for the Grizzly.

When I had the two of them side-by-side in the garage I noticed that the Honda actually appeared to have more clearance than the Grizzly, so I measured them. From the skid plate to the floor was 12.25" on the Honda and just under 11" on the Grizzly. So when Honda claims 10", what are they actually measuring? It appeared to me that no matter what measurement I took (lowest point on the axle...) my Honda always measured more than the grizzly.

So here is where it gets really interesting. I walked across the street to my neighbor's Arctic Cat 650 LE, which claims 13" of ground clearance. Using the same measurement (ground to skid plate), I get 12.5" on the cat, only 0.25" more than the Honda.

So, what am I missing here? Is Honda understating the ground clearance? Are they measuring it with a rider on the bike?

 

very interesting indeed. I think though that most manufacturues do it from the lowest point yet that doesnt make sense because i here allot of talk about clamed GC being lowere than it states. THe outy 800 i hear has a claimed 12 in but it has a few less then that. My prairie has like 7.8 or somthing like that claimed which was basically what i was at its lowest point at the rear diff but it has like 9 and 9 under the beast. So who knows how they go about measuring.
