Default Recon back fireing

We put a K&N air filter in my sons 02 Recon now it back fires when he lets off the gas with the engine compression. We were told it was to lean and moved the needle but it did not make a difference. Any sugestions. Thanks PS. it did give it a lot more power

Youre right to think its from being too lean. But on throttle letoff, the carb is running on the idle circuit, not the needle, so turn the mixture screw out 1/4 turn or so, and that will richen the idle circuit only.

Thanx you. i was looking at the service book and did not find a mixture screw on the carb. perhaps it was called somthing else.

There was a

Throttle Stop screw. I think that is the idle adjustment.
Pilot screw
and a drain screw.

I think it is the pilot screw.
Let me know.. thanxs again

Its the one on the underside of the carb. Just forward of the float bowl. Screwing out, is richer.
