Default Rincon 680 trail performance

Nice post ForemanDan, propnut, & Bbryan05. This isn't a BS Rincon war, but notice how the most helpful replies on this thread are from actual owners vs bashers. AGAIN, NO ONE ATV DOES IT ALL, Not a single one.....including the KQ, Grizz, Bomb 800 or 650, BF's,......etc. I,for one, think the Rincon is more than trail worthy and I don't buy into the underpowered and no engine braking stories. Raptor5, I'd listen ONLY to those that either A. Own an '06 Rincon or B. Have spent time riding one. It is a different machine than the '05 and that is a fact not an opinion.

Yep, I thought exactly the samething with my Rincon,I just got USE to it having poor engine downhill braking for the 2 years that I owned it. That is until I went back to an ATV that had REAL downhill engine braking again. There were some hairy downhill moments too.

To safely and successfully navigate a steep and serious downhill grade, the operator must stay in CONTROL of his ATV and to aid this process, engine braking really helps out ALOT. Why should ANYONE have to get USE to not having it?Thats like owning an ATV with no brakes and getting use to it,dangerous and risky, but you make do.

You've never needed a LOCKER? Thats cool, but it just indicates that you've not taken it in real serious mud yet. My Rincon was OK in the thick stuff, but even with 589s on all four corners, you could sure tell it was'nt up to par with my other buddies big bore ATVs that come FACTORY with lockers. That is because of the Rincon's 3wd and poor low range when compared to the other big bore 4x4s.

As far as beating your buddies 800 BRP on a MX track? Big deal! Two riders with the same experience level and weight, and the Rincon has NO chance of taking the BRP 800 in ANY phase of the race---PERIOD!.

I know, I owned them BOTH!
Is it your goal in life to stay on the Honda forum when you ride something else just to put them down?

1) I can control it just fine going downhill. I am sorry that you couldn't and had to trade down to a King Quad.

2) I take it through anything I wish. How much more mud does it take to stop it? I really dont care for it to go over the handlebars. I guess some people without skills need a locker to even get through puddles.

3)Both of us have the same skill level and are within 10 lbs of each other. The Bomb will simply not handle as well as the Rincon. I hate to burst your bubble. If I want to drag race I will go to a track with a car.

PS. The Baja race was in 2002. The Rincon was a just released 03. The most major mod it had was the front differential was removed to save weight. ................Dang, how did they make it across that desert without a front differential, let alone a locker?

that's right mud, my bad
2002 baja 1000 / 03 Rincon.

Getting back to your question Raptor5, I wanted the Rubicon to use as a compact tractor as much as something to zip around on. I've ridden the Rincon just enough to get a feel for it and I'm still happy with the Rubicon (although I'd take the Rincon over it for a fast trail ride anyday). Sure there are faster quads out there that go through 2 feet more mud climb 90 degree hills and out-accelerate a CR500, but I'm happy with mine. I'd be happier with an 06 Rubicon, but I'd have fun on a Rancher too. Not to say a Rincon won't work, but no low will limit that.

Foreman Dan, BBryan05,
Can you tell me more details how the Rincon behaves creeping up steep trails or technical trails. Do you have to give it like half throttle to make it move or will it creep very slow. I just have no experience with this transmission and don't know anyone that has one to try. I guess what I'm asking is, does it act like a manual shift atv if it were stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear trying to take off on a hill or climb over an obstacle or does the torque converter give it plenty of low end crawling power? Again, not really concerned as much about how good the engine braking is, spent many years on a 350x and 250 bigred and as many of you may know anything seems easier down hill after perfecting downhill on these. My opinion is going downhill at least you can see where you are going and choose a path or as I have done many times on the atc's BAIL OFF , going uphill and not having the gear really sucks and coming down backwards or upside down is worse (in my opinion). Thanks again for the info.

Mine has plenty of low end crawling power.

I'm 32. My father also has 05 Rincon, he is 55. When we ride together, He goes up the hills slow and steady where as I like to power up them a little faster, if conditions allow. Neither of us has had a problem climbing anything, but there have been a few climbs we didn't have ba!!'s to try.

and if not having a locker bothers you, then get one from highlifter. mine works great.

All that being said. It seems like slow technical riding is your thing. If that is majority of your riding, the Rubicon might be the better choice. My buddy has 2002 and that thing is a tank in 4-lo. But if slow stuff is only part of your riding, and you enjoy putting it in 2wd and cruising the trails, and a little fun in the mud too. The Rincon is a blast to do a little bit of everything on. Defnitely an SUV.

Default Rincon 680 trail performance

I have 4500+ miles on an 03 and 400 miles on a 06 Rincon. The 06 is better in many small ways.

I have had the 03 to Utah and Colorado on some very high and very steep mountain trails and roads. It never lacked for traction or power going up and did well rock crawling. I could stop on any thing and start back up. It didn't stall.

Going downhill has only really bothered me once. In Utah there was a trail with hard switchbacks that almost needed a three point turn to descend. The trail was about 6 foot wide with a drop of hundreds of feet. That was a situation in which I wish the Rincon had more engine braking. It was tough to hold the brakes, climb to the high side and muscle it around those tight corners while on teetering on three wheel with a killing drop right in front of you. If I had to ride that trail often it would not be on a Rincon; having my legs shake for fifteen minutes was no fun.

In the small mountains of Arkansas that has not been a problem. Better tires like the Bighorns and a set of Highlifter spring make the Rincon much more stable in downhill off-chamber situations. The front discs on the 06 are a great improvement in holding the Rincon on any hill that has enough grip for the tires used. Never felt the back end trying to come around. I am cautious going down steep hills and love to blast going up.

Every trail is different and each riders ability and comfort level is different. If you want a mountain goat the Rincon is not it. If you want a fast, comfortable, and reliable trail eater the Rincon is at or near the top of the list.
