Default 400ex carb problem

ok, a few days back i was riding around, and noticed my quad was leaking gas (out of a drain tube). so i turned the gas switch to the off position. later on i turned it back on, started my quad, then 30 seconds later as im going down the road i notice the engine is sputtering and detonating (?). i let it idle and it dies. i try to re-start but there isnt enough gas to light off, no matter what i do with the throttle/choke. i turned the gas switch off and waited 15 minutes. tried it again, but giving it full throttle and starting it got enough gas in there to start. the few times ive had to ride it since i have to keep the throttle just a little above idle to keep it running, and fuel leaks out.

if its a carb problem, should i take it apart and look at it? i dont like the idea of playing around with it, but its either that or risk going to work with a quad that may not start.

sounds like your carb is flooding either because the float is sticking ir the needle is not sealing in the seat. try turning your gas on and tapping on the float bowl with the handle of a screwdriver. if that doesn't stop the gas from leaking, you will have to remover the float bowl and clean it out and clean out the needle and seat.

sorry, no help here, but you ride your quad to work?!?! that's so awesome... wish i could do that.

i agree with fixitman that it's probably a float problem. had the same thing with my 250r and messing with the float adjustment fixed it.

wierd thing is my dad pretty much said the exact same thing. ill give it a few knocks and see if it helps. im not sure how it started, because all that happened the day i had problems is i ran out of gas so i went on reserve, then i filled up, came back, jumped a road, so that may have jarred something.
