Default Oil overfill Help!!!!!

went to do my first oil change on my new 06 500 foreman. Took the parts guy advice instead of reading manual. He told me 4.9 quarts of oil, sold me 5. I dumped 4.5 quarts, seen the level was high on dipstick, figured some oil had to go to filter. Started it for a minute or so, looked at manual and it said 2.5. Shut off machine, drained oil to right level. Started machine, now I have a thump, thump that I never heard before. Sounds like it is thumping by the oil filter cover. What kind of damage could have occured?

Default Oil overfill Help!!!!!

thanks for the quick reply, like i said, I ran it maybe for a minute, 2 at the most. Will the air go away after running it? I never noticed the noise before, but then again I wasnt looking for it. I know its my own fault for not reading first. What a idiot.

air? im not saying its wrong... but ok...

sometimes overfilling and engine will blow seals. anything leaking anywhere? do you see/smell oil?

but if you didnt run it that long or rev it too much it may have not hurt anything. i dont know what the internal oil pressure is inside the engine and what the tolerances are for this but yeah you should have drained it all out and started over. is the filter the right one and do you have it in there good? it may be possible that the overwhelming gush of oil knocked the filter out of place if it wast securely in there? i dont think has a screw-on type of filter? if its like mine, it goes in a certain way and you put the little cover back on (so it may not have come loose but could be damaged?). get another filter too while you re-do everything make sure it is the right one and that it is in there right & good, put the right amount of oil in and carefully check things out again... other wise, if it keeps up, take it to the honda shop. was the parts guy at a honda shop?

I see no leaks, and smell no oil. He was a Honda dealer but not the one I bought the machine from. I was careful to let it idle and not rev it, by the time I picked up the manual and read the oil amount was how long it ran, 1 minute not quiet 2

no, I just drained it out until the level was right and then started it and let it run a few minutes. I will go back and get more oil and filter and chew this guy out and pray my new machine isnt wrecked.. any other input from the experts would be great

Make sure the filter was installed correctly. Its posible to install it backwards. The rubber o-ring goes towards the cover.

a knock or a thump?

you may have a lot of oil at the top of the engine because of the excessive pressure. If you didn't blow any seals, chances are its okay.

pull the spark plug boot off and just crank the engine (with the correct amount of oil in it) and see if it still thumps. This will help to move the oil through the engine and hopefully back to the bottom end and not hurt the engine since it is just the starter running it.

do u hear the thump while cranking?
