Default 250R Transmission OIl??

Well is there a quality or weight for transmisson oil for the 250R?

I dont have the abiltiy to go to my local place to get some good oil, all I have is our local little store that only has brand oils for motors. I would have to order my oil, and it cost a lot of money for shipping.

So I heard 10/30 or 40 would work, or ATF also... I am not sure if I want to put that in my 250R unless I know it works good.

ALso how much does the transmission hold.. like a quart or more?

If it comes down to it,, I will have to order some Honda Transmission oil.

Any good brand name straight SAE 30 weight will be just fine in a 2-stroke tranny, change every 3 or 4 big rides or once a month and you should be fine, we're only talking $6 or $7 bucks, routine maintenance is the major factor with any oil.

Some basic oil info: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm

First off, you are lubing gears that mesh at high pressure so you need an oil with lots of high presssure additives, and that's NOT any car oil currently in existence. Plus, you have a wet clutch and most car oils contain moly, which will make your clutch slip.

At the very least, you need an Motorcycle Specific engine oil that is API SG/JASO MA or a transmission specific lube like Maxima MTL or Honda's own HP trans oil. I would absolutely spend the extra money to mail order the proper stuff! Your trans isn't going to be consuming any oil at all or needing to be changed real often, so that may help make the cost more manageable.

There in the frozen north you only need something light, so I would pick a 30 weight JASO MA engine oil or better yet 75 weight Maxima MTL, at least in the "warmer" season.

Yea in the manual it just calls for regular 10-40 motor oil, I use a motorcycle 10-40 for since the oil is for your gears and clutch.

why dont you just buy you oil online in bulk like 10 quarts or something at a time... Oil is extremely important using some car oil is not enought...I run full synthetic oils in my ATV's .. look for JASO Rating MP for the top end and JASO MA for the tranny also there should be a MA or SG rating as well. and no MOLY def bad for ATV"s...Spend the extra money now it will beworth it ..... my $.02
