Default Sand (Dunes) Question

Sunday I will be going to the dunes or some place with alot of sand and mud. They won't say exactly what kinda spot it is. Hopefully I will have my winch mounted. I was waundering how well do you think a stock Recon ES 2005 would do on sand. I know I should just gun it right off the bat because i could dig and just sink and get stuck I hafta take it easy since I don't have paddle tires. Its only a 250 so I don't have alot of power to work with. I am just lookin to have some fun in some mud and sand. I will be riding along with my 4 wheeler probably some of the time he will be driving his Lifted 4x4 f150 also. I am hoping it doesn't try out to much by the time we get there on the sand making it easier for me to get around. Its suppose to rain Friday we are going Sunday. I have never been to our dunes, but I was told they are really soupy so I just hope I can get around and have a little fun. Worst case I guess just leave the 4 wheeler in the truck and drive around in the truck. Also I dunno that they are true "dunes" . I am not lookin for no high speed fun just something to get me around. He said there was also mud so well i guess i can get her muddy heh.

You will be fine, smaller quads make it through sand just fine. Thats what there designed for.

Default Sand (Dunes) Question

As for sand, at Pismo they use to rent Recons, before the 250EX came along! The stock tires do well if you leave them aired down some. While riding, keep your rpm's up and don't let it bog down.

As for mud, I live in the desert where we don't have mud (thank God!), so I can't give any advice there.

my advise on mud..... STAY OUT OF IT.... your quad will never be the same... It will always have a nasty film all over the parts you can scrub down when you wash it off plus its a bitch to wash anyways...i took nearly 2 hours with a pressure washer and sponge, quad still isnt the same...

Default Sand (Dunes) Question

A 250 should be fine in the sand or mud, just make sure you keep the PSI in the tires around 3.5 to 4 and like it was stated before, keep the RPM's up. If the sand is truely wet or soupy then knobby's won't be that much of a hindrance.

Default Sand (Dunes) Question

That raises my confidence. I know the 4 wheeler isn't heavy at all since its not a 4x4 so I figured that would be working in its favor. Its pretty much the sport version with racks and better plastic protection which isn't alot of weight. I usually run my pressures at about 3.5-4 the entire time while riding so I should be good to go then. I just picked up all my stuff to mount my winch so I will have it just incase.

Also to the person who said stay out of mud. Its to late for that. I have been in mud before just not as deep mud/water as there will be this sunday. It already looks not as good as new, but I didn't buy it to look pretty. I bought the 4 wheeler to go have fun. I just come home pressure wash mud off of it then park it until next time. I don't scrub or nothing.

Default Sand (Dunes) Question

You running stock tires??? I don't have my Recon anymore so I can't just go out to the garage and look, but what is the recommended tire pressure on the plackard on the fender? I can't remember, but as I recall it was quite low (????), like less thatn 3.5-4 pounds????

Recommend pressure was 2.9 +/- .4 I run it at about 3.5 because any lower than that I don't like the way it rides. The tires themselves can hold up to like 20-30psi so its not like im pushing them at their limit. Yes they are stock tires.

Default Sand (Dunes) Question

Well I went to the Sand Bar wasn't dunes it was Bar, but we didn't get rain like we were suppose to so it was pretty soft stuff. Not quiet as soft as a dune probably, but pretty soft.

05 Recon ES
3.5 PSI all the way around.
It did great riding across the worst i could get in the sand. I stopped in it a few times because buddys here were on their 4x4 trucks did. Its a bit hard to get going if I am spinning In first and slam it into 2nd getting rpms high it really gets me moving fairly ez. There was some mud and got stuck a few times. The mud was horrible. I could go about halfway into anything and just bury it. I had a winch though and got out everytime $44 investment got good use. I did have the entire back half of the 4 wheeler buried so that the muffler went under the water but the front end was still on top of the mud ended up dieing. had to pull it up outta the mud/water to get it to refire. Water spit outta the baffler part of the muffler for about 30sec or so. After that seemed to run pretty good. I don't think it hurt anything. I rode it the rest of the day just fine. Didn't get home till dark so gonna check my fluids make sure I didn't take on any water. Even though I didn't think I did. I am gonna hafta do that delectrical grease stuff to my coil so it doesn't die when I hit the water.
