I wouldnt mess with it if your quad is stock, itll cause more headaches than its worth. If you do mess with it make sure you know how many turns it is from being all the way in so you can set it back if you need to.

The mixture screw only effects idle mixture. It has a very slight and minimal effect on mid or full throttle. So if you remove the lid, youre looking at adjusting all 3 ranges in the carb. Pilot, needle and main.
Go ahead and play with the screw, all it does is fine tune the coarse adjustment that the pilot jet takes care of. Usually 4 turns out from bottomed, is the limit of adjustability...if the idle needs to be richer, then you need to go one up on the piot jet, and start over on the mixture screw. I play with the mixture as the seasons change..richer in winter and leaner in summer. Also the gas will effect the mixture at idle, if you normally use pure gasoline, and in a pinch use the blended..youll notice the blended gas is leaner, and going a 1/4 turn richer restores the good idle .
Being too rich only wastes gas, being too lean can do damage, so be aware of the symptoms of lean, and take steps to adjust them out.
Heres a good article on jetting yourself, and it lists the symptoms of lean and rich.

thanks for the response. i run a 1 to 5 mixture of race gas and premium. i always thought it made the engian run cleaner and cooler. but now that i know the screw is not that much of a gain i will probably leave it alone. i am trying to save a little bit so i can get the hrc kit and some nerf bars. thanks a lot.
