Usually I have gone down to Majestic Kamp and Lost Trails in Rew, PA. It is still a drive from you, maybe another hour and change, but definately worth it. Nice groomed trails, lots of hills, a good amount of mud if you are into that, and a nice play mx track. I also ride at Rocky Roost near Watkins Glen, and there is a NYTRO spot in Cuba, NY I would like to try out before the snow flies. The shortest drive I have to be able to ride right now is about 40 minutes NYS sucks for trailriders. I wish you good luck with the new landowners where you currently ride. Hopefully, they ride too.

Scooter,
Never heard of the NYTRO thing in Cuba....that's an easy drive for me. What else can you tell about that place?

Check out the NYTRO or the Trailpass websites, better info there than I could give you.

Longevity and dependability are important to us and I believe a well maintained stock ATV has a better chance at delivering both.

Our 01 Rubicon is 100% stock except for the radial tires. So far in 7000 miles and 800+ hours the only repairs have been both upper control arm shafts, bushings and seals, it still has the original brakes and battery.

I plan on getting a lot of miles out of this one and so far 10,000+ miles will be easy, but then it is a Honda.

Just my two cents- Some people (like me) with mechanichal abilities modify their quads to SAVE MONEY. Right now I have a 300ex with lots of cash on it. That was a mistake. First off, the 300 is rediculously slow. At my semi-local track, I pretty much stab the gas and shift through the gears when I need to, and still lose to everybody. What I should have done is bought a torn-to-poop 400, rebuilt it from the ground up, heavily modded it with the leftover money, and hung with stock 450's. Lemme lay it out for you. I bought my 300 new for 4000 dollars. I have discovered that one can acquire a well-loved 2000-ish 400ex for about 2000 dollars. (lets say 2200 just for kicks) Now, say I spend 800 dollars to fix it complely. (to basically return it to stock-and this is a gross overestimate) I now have 1000 dollars left to buy STUFF! ...460 dollars for a complete performance exhaust, 40 dollars for a filter and minor intake mods, 250 dollars for brand new ITP Holeshot tires all around, 225 dollars for a performance cam, and 25 dollars left over for gas, jets, and oil. I see your point, and am amazed that people haven't verbally unloaded on you. That was actually my first insticnt, but I fought it off.
(please also note that all those prices were market value, which is NOT what I would get them at because I sniff around. For example, I bought an HMF pipe that retails for 249 dollars for 199, got some sweet posters, stickers, and a pile of jets too.)

JimmyHoffa,

Thanks for your input....as you will see, my initial thread and subsequent replies have stated many times that I understood the need to upgrade if you are indeed a competitive rider (i.e. racing-pro or not). You seem to fall into that category from the looks of it. Most of my focus is on non-racing riders....people like me, who just ride for fun on the weekends.

I also see that you are a money conscious shopper, like me. You are in the minority....most people shell out big bucks without looking really hard for the most effective, but least expensive solution. As to the "verbal unloading", why would my post elicit that? I'm merely expressing an opposing view on the subject of "Bigger is always better".

first, i love my stock 250ex(hell i haven't even changed the tires yet and i still love this machine!). second, i see where you are coming from. when i was about to get my 250ex every one was telling me how i don't need to get it and how slow it is,etc etc. i stepped out on faith and glad that i did. it does get annoying to constantly hear people say a certain bike is a bad bike because it isn't fast. i personally don't believe that is a fair assessment. it is, in my opinion, better to say that it isn't race worthy but it still has good speed. i mean a 250 can get up to 50mph, in my book that's pretty quick(no, it isn't as fast as a 660etc, but that isn't what the 250 was built for).

i also understand the stance of wanting the biggest and the best. my dad wasn't one to shell out a lot of money on material things. i do. i want the big screen tv, the xbox, the xbox 360, the atv, the seadoo, etc. if i wanted things like that growing up i had to work and save money. i only had one job in high school, i was an athlete and that took up a lot of my time. in the end it paid off as i got a full ride for football, but i didn't have a lot of things that i wanted. now as a father of 2 boys(3yrs and 10mths) i have a tendency to buy material things for them. my 3 year old got a 4wheeler for christmas(the walmart 660 replica), he loves it! my stance is if your kids are good kids, they don't cause a lot of problems, the mind, they do their school work, you should spoil them. my two are good kids. they mind, they're very smart, so i feel they should get rewarded for good behavior sometimes. it has nothing to do with giving them the ideal that you have to have high dollar stuff feel adequate. my stance is if that is what you want spend the dough on it, but don't look down on someone else because they don't do that. THAT is what seems to be the deal on this forum a lot. the mentality of "i have a 350 that i've bored, jetted, piped, put wheel spacers on it, shocks, and a new filter. why would you not want to do the same?" to me that mentality is devastating because you are looking down at someone elses quad because they doesn't it to go 120mph.

kinda long but this is simply my .02

So you're essentially saying that all quads should be treated as equally worthy.... I have a 300ex, which is FASTER THAN YOURS. However, I'm not allowed to (by your rules) "look down" on your quad and 'devastate' you, even though my engine is of a superior breed, and my quad has every feature (and more) as your does. All models from a manufacturer aren't equal and "just built" for different things. The 250 and 300 are both sport models, however, anyone can quite obviously see that the 300 is simply a more capable, BETTER bike. Go read my "400ex gurus help a newbie" post to see how I behave in the presence of people with better bikes than I have. The first thing I do is acknowledge that my bike is inferior to theirs! IT IS! ...Just like your bike is inferior to mine, and that guy down your street with a polaris has an inferior bike when compared to yours!
