300ex problem HAS spark and fuel, but wont run!

My next step would be to check the compression. The service amnual says 185 plus or minus 14 psi for compression.
How did all this start? You just shut it off...and now its running crappy?
Hows the intake and carb? any air leaks?

Well it was down and out for 6months because of the carrier bearings and I finally got that fixed last week. Thanks to ya'll.
And its first day out it was running very well and about half the day went by and about 2hours of driveing and I checked the oil and it was at the very tip/end of the stick so I added some mobil 1 syn. as I didn't have anything else and we ran it anothere 45mins to 1 hour and on the last few starts it became hard to start, but did and ran very well the whole day. I then get up the next morning to go ride again and it just wont start AT ALL.
So this brings us to this post.
I tried to check compression but I couldn't because I need to buy the correct size adapter for my gauge as I don't have it. So I did the bump start with my truck. It didn't take much to start but it ran as if it was trying to clear out the whole time and surged a lot. Never ran correctly, just surged and bogged. It would rip hard and then surge. Let it cool down and again it wont start, but will bump start with a tow. please let me know if ya need anymore info to help and thank you.

hmm. just wondering if your cam timing somehow is off? doest make sense though if you werent working on that part of it. I guess get the right adapter for your compression guage, should be at least 150psi, just a number off the top of my head for most moder 4-stroke small engines. If you got that, it will run. Also maybe check for any gas in the oil, maybe your float valve is sticking open and putting slugs of gas into the engine? Worth a shot...Also make sure of no air leaks around the intake boot.

I changed back to the honday oil yesturday as I thought that was a problem. So no gas in the oil.
I pulled the carb to check for dirty gas and just make sure. I did check for air leaks, but it was all nice and tight.
I do run with the airbox lid off and a foam uni filter. It could use a cleaning and oiling.
It to me feels as if there is a valve issue or timming issue, but how and the heck would it skip timming as it was running just great one day and the next nothing but crap.
Wouldn't a valve issue make it hard to start?
Please don't forget me, but I am gonna try and buy a adapter for my compression gauge so I can rule that out.

I think I'd take the carb off and make sure it's clean. Blow out the passages inside real good. Also..drain the fuel from the tank into something where you can watch the flow to make sure it' a good continuous flow. There's also a screen in the tank [at the fuel petcock] you might check that too.
I really doubt it has to do with the timing or compression if it ran fine the day before this started.
You might go over all the electrical connections and make sure they're all clean and tight.
The CDI could also be going bad

Put the air lid back on and test it again. Removing the lid , with stock jets is gonna be really lean, and youll end up with your symptoms of hard starting and running like crap.

I don't see it being the carb as I try to prime it with gas also and it wont start.
But I will clean it anyway very easy.
That is why I thought the valves might be screwed.
It has the lid removed because I have a K&N and a FMF exhaust running a 130 main jet.
Snap on guy will have my adapter in a week.
How do i test the CDI?
