Default Oil Plug

It seems the the previous owner of my 98 Foreman 450ES was a moron, and he stripped out the oil plug. Right now I wrapped the plug with tephlon tape just to keep the oil from dripping out. What is my best option for fixing this correctly? I've heard a lot of different methods from my friends (heli-coil, re-tap, use a +1mm plug). What do you guys suggest?

well if the plug got rounded off then I would try beating a smaller socket on the plug, vice grips,or sears sells stuff for stripped bolts...So I would take out the old plug and as long as the threads are fine then I would just install the new one but if he stripped them out too then try tapping the hole but make sure to get out any shavings from the engine.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that. This was how I first found out that it was stripped. I changed the oil, put the plug in and it turned freely with my fingers (it never got tight) so I assumed the bolt was stripped and bought a new one the next day, but it did the same thing. It is the hole threads that are stripped. If I do just re-tap it, and there are some shavings inside the case, do I just do an oil change twice to clear all the shavings out?

I had the same thing happen to my kx 125. I ended up tapping the hole and putting a larger bolt, which I cut down to work like a plug. It worked, but it wasn't a very good fix and I wish I had done it differently. I wish I had either installed a heli-coil, or bought the kind of plug with a smaller drain plug in it. The kind you can put on an automatic transmission drain pan. As far as the shavings go, put grease in the grooves of the tap and it will catch the metal that the tap cuts. Then fill it with oil and drain it. I would stand the atv up on it's end so you can have room to work on it. Good luck man. I know it sucks. Been there.
