Default 450R trans problems

I am running GN4 ,Ill try HP4. The dealer still hasnt looked at it yet. Could this be a break in issue? I bought it new in August ,Its been ridden maybe 200miles. I changed the oil when I got it (motor and trans) Then again after 2 rides (100 miles). If the dealer doesnt do any thing Ill put some more miles on it, try the HP4 oil and see if it gets better or worse. would you recommend, moly (mb) in the motor and non moly(MA) in the trans? And whats the deal with the amount of oil in the trans, I keep hearing different things. Thanks again for the info

Some of the gears (3rd and 5th as I recall), are only lubed by splash. If you ride straight and level for a long period, they will not get enough lube. Running extra oil, insures that they will be kept wet. This is really a problem with a dirt bike that is ridden for long distances on the pavement. Have actually never heard of it being a problem on a quad, but why take a chance????

You can run a JASO MA engine oil or one of the trans specific lubes (like Honda's HP Trans Oil or Maxima MTL) in the trans, and a JASO MA or MB engine oil in the engine side. My personal preference is Maxima Extra, an ester synthetic in both the engine and trans sides. http://www.maximausa.com/products/4s...synthextra.asp

Some good basic oil info, in case you haven't seen this: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm

yeah we use gn4 honda oil only we have used regular oil and ams oil with out the same clutch feel! we like the honda oil only( no we are not a honda dealer) we do change our oil aftyer every weekend of racing engine and motor filter too! we had the high compression piston put in after a full season of racing on the stock piston and the inside looked like it was two hours old!we ran another full season of mx and hard practice still looks good . we are splitting the cases to check bearings and crank for wear getting ready for 07 season .good luck!

How much oil do you run in the trans? 100cc more or a full quart? I picked up my quad, the dealer "could not duplicate" the shifting problem. But they can only ride in their parking lot. Ill try the HP4 and see how it does, thanks for the info

on the right case cover is a fastener plug witha 10mm socket head after you drain the oil in the tranny you take this bolt or plug out and refill the tranny till it comes out of the hole, it takes like three quarters to seven eights of a quart. not even a full quart let the oil run out the hole tll the oil quits flowing replace the plug and your set! to much oil is not good same with the engine oil do not over fill it! refill to top of window run for 3 minutes and let sit for 3 minutes recheck window should go up three quarters to the top of the window not over the top! too much oil is just as bad as not enuff!good luck!

CRUSTY IS WRONG......DO OVERFILL YOUR TRANS! It won't hurt anything, and may save your a ruined bottom end. Dirt bike guys with the 450 engine are all using a full quart, and it doesn't even blow out the vents. Go to the http://www.thumpertalk.com/ CRF450X and R forums and ask about it, if you don't believe me. Fill it until it comes out the weep hole, then put the plug back in and add an additional 100cc's! Even the magazines have recommended this..........

DO NOT overfill your engine, however!

mr. reconranger may not agree with me and thats great, cause it is america, but till i blow a tranny all over the ground I AM NOT WRONG! he was asking for help, I have personally seen two tranny seals blown to hell from over filling!I am sure it was way to full ,but way to full is still not good! 100cc may be the recomendation. but no one puts a 450r thru more hell than us, and this is the way we do it and we have no problems so it works fine!and we have 3 years of racing on the 04. do what ya want!

Again, play is safe and run a little extra oil. A blown seal is nothing compared to a totally blown bottom end!
