Change the oil often! Change it after the first hour (along with the filter), and I would suggest you not ever go more than 5 hrs max without an oil change.
There are a couple of oil threads on the board right now, so I would suggest you check them out. After break-in, run a synthetic oil. Run at least 100 cc's of extra oil in the trans.

yea the time range you are talking about is about within recon's time range so its the same thing anyhow just maintain the quad oil wise changing the engine oil often and checking the level every ride and also check the tranny oil...when the bike is cold let it sit for a few minutes idling and then shut it off and check the oil level and on the other side there is an tranny oil check plug and if you see oil come out then you are fine and if you don't see any apply slowly until you do...also just keep the airfilter cleaned and chain lubed up and clean...finally get the valves check or adjusted about every 10 to 15 tanks of gas.

I would certainly change my oil any time it looked dirty, no matter how few hours it had on it. (Actually though, modern oils can absorb quite a bit of dirt, without seriously effecting their lubricating ability.) The problem with your post, is it might encourage some uninformed reader to pass up a needed oil change just because the oil doesn't "look dirty" yet.........at least that's the way it sounded to me.
Those who want to play it safe with this high strung engine, will be wise to keep the oil change interval fairly short. While I try to keep my oil changes at no more than 5 hours (that would be one average desert day ride), there are times we do weekend camping trips where I might have to excede that, because I sure don't want to be doing an oil change out in the dirt and sand at some place like Ocotillo Wells! But, even on a long weekend trip, I find I don't spend all my time on just the 450 anyway. There are always lots of different quads, bikes, Rhinos, rails and Jeeps to rip around in, so it keeps my 450 mileage down to something reasonable.
