1999 400ex, last weekend I broke a shifter fork. I drained my oil before pulling the motor out and part of it came out of my engine case, it isn't pretty.

So far I have snapped my swingarm in half, broke a shifter fork, had to drill out the swing arm bolt and had a broken intake boot.

I have only owned honda quads and am extremely **** on the maintenance of the quads.

Just a line to let anyone who cares know what happened to mine.

I have also heard some guys at the races breaking second gear just like the R's.
So, while I have the engine down I will probably replace second gear to be safe. If you have any other suggestions, drop a line.

How hard do you ride in order to have all of that happen? I consider myself to ride fairly hard, not ***** out all the time, put pretty fast through the woods and hit jumps hard, and i havn't had one problem.

The faster I get, the more parts I break!! I do race woods and am I pretty hard on the quad, but I take care of it very well. I just haven't had any luck lately I guess.

I also powershift ( not using the clutch) about 75% of the time after I am in motion and think this may have caused it. However, I spoke to a technician at a Honda dealership that also races the same circuit and has for 15 years. He said he also powershifts about 90% of the time and has for years without a problem. He did confirm that there are racers on 400EX breaking second gear and I am not the first to break a shifter fork.

I took the motor out today and will open it up to see if anything caused it to fail.
