Stock air filter oil
You will probably get a hundred people telling you not to do this, but after trying to clean the honda filter oil out of mine, I've used K&N oil ever since. I make sure the filter is coated well and the flange is greased. Been doing this for 2
years with no problems. I check for dust in the air intake and as of yet, it always looks clean.

Obviously you can do anything you want and justify it. I have read that some solvents will destroy the cell structure of the foam which can inhibit its ability to trap dirt, but I don't have personal testing experience with that. If the cell structure is changed, you probably won't see anything with the naked eye. Foam filter manufacturers do suggest using a "tacky" type of oil which many foam filter companies, ATV dealers, and Amsoil sells. This oil is specifically designed to stay in place on the foam and not run off. The oil should be put on both layers if you have a two layer foam. The oil for K&N filters is designed for gauze material so I don't know how that would work on foam.
They also sell cleaners that don't harm the foam, but also recommend dish soap in hot water as a substitute--which is what most people use as it's cheaper.

Maxima FFT or UNI, or one of the other super tacky filter treatments (I avoid the sprays because they just aren't economical) . Saturate the filter, then squeeze out all the excess....do wear gloves. Light oils tend to go "dry" or get sucked right through the filter, so think about that when making your choice.
I clean the filter by spraying it with PJ1 cleaner, letting it sit 15 minutes, then rinsing FROM THE INSIDE OUT with warm water.
