Please help with 2002 Rancher
#1
My Rancher is running fine, for about a half a mile. Then it dies and will not restart for about 10 min then it restarts and runs like new for another half a mile. I realize the first thing you would do is check the vent tube but its good and the ATV is getting a spark. I've already cleaned the carb and replaced the fuel. Anyone have any other ideas?

Same thing happened to my buddies Cat 500.It was his coil that went, ran fine for 10 min then he had to sit for 10 till it cooled down. Not sure if this is your problem but it might be worth checking.

could be your ignition coil. it gets hot and the coil windings open up, it quits. let it cool for 10 minutes or so, coil works again until it gets hot again, over and over.
if you know how to use an ohm-meter, take one with you and measure the continuity of the coil right after it dies. If it's open, could be your problem.

I think the other guys are on the right track , I had a simular problem , it would idle all day , no problem , ride for a 1/2 -to 1 hr. get hot , same thing , replaced the exiter coil , good to go !

Next time it does it stop and rock your weight from side to side on the pegs heavily. If it temporarily gets better, I'd try draining the bowl on your carb. You may have some particles floating around that eventually get sucked in. We've had this happen a few times over the years.

First thing to do is figure out if its spark or fuel.
Bring a spare spark plug with you, then when it dies, quickly unplug the spark plug on the motor, plug in the spare plug, and hold it against the motor and check for spark. No spark could be a few things, but im guessing you have spark. Its really doubtful the coil is bad, but you might have a bad pick up coil on the stator.
Nost likely youll have spark, and then you know you have a fuel problem. Seeing how you checked the vents on the gas tank...did you check the one or two vent lines on the carb? The over flow tube is also a vent, so make sure it isnt plugged with mud or dirt.
