Lack of engine braking is a SAFETY ISSUE that any prospective buyer needs to be aware of......otherwise I wouldn't care at all.

If someone is expecting their engine on a large rather heavy quad to hold them back going down a nasty descent and it can't do it, that could end up in a rollover, and get someone injured or even killed. Honda has historically been so conservative about liability issues, I am very surprised that they even let it out on the market.......

Another issue to consider is that when you are doing a nasty descent, if you are preocupied with modulating the brakes, that distracts you from other duties like analyzing the terrain, picking the best line, adjusting your weight, etc. It just seems like a distraction that is unnecessary.

Note that when the Rincon first came out, even the magazines made a big deal about the lack of engine braking. Faced with this criticism, in the later models Honda "improved" the engine braking, and actually made a big deal about it in their advertising. So, we have even Honda itself admiting that there is a problem!!! They just didn't take it far enough, and fix the problem completely.........

I guess I forgot to say what year, or I must have edited that part out. I bought it new in December 2006. It's a 2005 "leftover" as you called it. One of the ones Honda was offering a $2,100 discount on. Couldn't turn that down.

It's totally stock. Only added a hitch. I plan to keep it that way. It seems to do what I want it to do like it is.

This isn't bashing, it's just BUYER BEWARE type stuff........

If someone is well informed, decides they don't care about engine braking and goes into this knowing full well what they are getting, it's no big deal. (This seems to be what jkane did, so it was no big surprise to him.) But how are folks ever going to know if someone doesn't tell them??????

I'm performing a safety related public service here!

.......and did you know that the manual transmission autoclutch quads that I dearly love will roll backward in gear??? This is another SAFETY issue that I frequently point out: http://forums.atvconnection.com/mess...rd1=autoclutch

Hell, I'm criticizing my own machines here (I own three of them)! Funny, nobody ever called that basing???????

......and come to think of it, I bet the Rincon will roll backward on a hill too. Just another reason one might want to skip it and find another ride, if you are into nasty technical riding.........

Nobody should ever be critisized for pointing out a safety issue!

well thanks ranger, but if you don't get the feel for the engine braking in the first few minutes, you shouldn't be on the ATV anyway. You talk like it is going to suddenly surprise someone.

of course a semi auto will roll backwards while in gear. you were surprised?
So will my truck. that's what happens when you disengage a clutch (either by letting the engine fall below the centrifugal clutch engagement or pushing the pedal in). it's not a safety issue, its a characteristic.

my Rubicon's engine braking is so prominent I've almost gone over the bars by letting off of the throttle, is engine braking dangerous?

no, it's only a safety issue if THE DRIVER doesn't get it.

take it easy there, I just don't agree with how you frame it as a safety issue
