question on 2 strokes

Default question on 2 strokes

i heard that they are going to stop the production of 2 strokes.is this true?

Yes this is true. There are no more 2-stroke atv's left and within a few years (if not sooner) all 2-stroke MX bikes will be discontinued, although I have heard that you will be able to special order 2-stroke MX bikes for racing purposes, Kawasaki has already stopped production on the KX125, im sure the other companies will follow suit very soon.

it's a EPA thing

i bet we will be seing 4 stroke weed wackers and chainsaws soon.

What most people think about banning 2 strokes from being made is false. It is true that the EPA is puting high demands on emissions regulations but 2 strokes are not being banned. I have a boat with a 2 stroke v6 outboard. I love quads and boats. BRP has the Evinrude e-tec 2 stroke outboard motor that is cleaner burning, more fuel efficient, quieter and still has more power than any 4 stroke motor on the market. These have the lowest emissions of ANY motor. The technology is there but at what cost to atv riders. A typical 150hp e-tec 2 stroke is about 12k. Most 150hp 4 stroke motors are about 7-8k. So yes there is a price difference that most boat owners will pay to keep thier 2 stroke motor. To maintain a 4 stroke far exceeds the money you save buy buying a 4 stroke. The new e-tec has a scheduled maintenance every 3 years. The maintenance costs about 600 for that 3 years and then every 3 years after. A 4 stroke outboard needs maintenance every year with the cost of about 600-1200 a year. So within a few years the 2 stroke is actually cheaper. The 2 stroke comes with a factory 7year warranty. The 4 stroke is anywhere from 6mo-2 years. Now this is technology from BRP. 2 strokes are not dead. They are just hybernating but I can bet in a few years you will start to see low emissions 2 strokes in atv's again. And it will be from BRP/CanAm. The demand is not there yet but once the technology is adapted to atv engines the demand will be overwelming.

i seen that infomercial on the e-tec motor.man thats a sweet outboard.from what i heard they not stopping the production of 2 stroke bikes they`re just not importing them into epa regulated countries.

2Manytoys is 100% correct, 2 strokes will go away, 4 strokes will reach there max output, then in 5-10 years the return of the 2 stroke with EFI and whatever else they desire! This is a very very prototype next gen 2 stroke:

I have seen these motors up close and they are unbelievable. And yes you are right about the production but once the technology is adapted to the smaller atv engines we will see tons of them. And it will happen!

I also read that article but the only thing that I dont agree with is the fact that they said 2 strokes anything over 100cc's were banned in teh us since 1985. This is totally wrong. Maybe its a typo. The technology in teh BRP motors is actually very simple. Looks like Honda is over thinking this. But then again BRP technology on the 2 stroke is patented.

yup, im sure honda has this under some crazy tight lips- they are after all, one of the best engine builders world wide! My father remembers when they came out with the old 1960's xl 50, largley the same engine in todays crf50 only back then it was an amazing future to the motercycle that lasted 50 years!
