i might get a new 400ex, i do alot of trail riding and i want to know if there is anything "special" you can do to make it better. (nothing expensive though)
i hear that if you kick the front sprocket down 1 tooth up front that it does alot and is perfect for trail riding?
is there any other little things like this that can help that much more
thanks

I've owned two 400ex's and there isn't any magic trick to make them any better, the best thing you can do to them if you want some more power is pipe, filter, and rejet it. But the current one I have now is all stock and it will do anything any other machine can do on the trails. I think the stock gearing is low enough as it is, 1st gear will get you through the tight stuff fine, and 2nd and 3rd will climb hills with ease.

how slow could you crawl in 1st gear without stalling and no clutch play? because this well be my first clutched quad so im really worried about this at this point like i really want one bad i have looked on 4 different forum sites studying this quad, but i dont want to be stalling in the trails every 30 seconds, and the hills are were it really worries me because i dont wanna stall it there or something like that i know hoe to ride good its just i have been doing it all on an auto quad.

The big thing is that the quad can become wheelie happy! The EX already wheelies easily (which is great), but when you gear it down you will have to be very carefull to keep the front end on the ground.
Imagine you are jaming up a huge steep hill and the thing stands straight up and wheelies right out from under you!
I went up one tooth in back, and I can lug through slow technical stuff just fine. In any case, you will quickly learn the clutch and it won't be any big deal........

speedy-Not quite sure how to take you reply???? I'm trying to point out that if you are doing a hillclimb on a quad that is wheelie happy because you went and geard it down way to far, that you are popssibly going to end up in a world of hurt!!!! Hope you get the picture.....if you are able????

is a 07 z400 more then a 07 400ex??? I never even priced a 400ex because i knew the z400 was better and i think you should look getting one of them and man dont worry about driving slow in tight trails. i ride the tightest, steepest most awkward trails ever at my families hunt camp up north. in hunting season everyone else has a huge 4x4 quad besides me lol they dont understand how my bike can make it through the trails, but i can just keep it in first gear and not even touch the throttle and it will just crawl through anything, we have to drive over lil wood bridges made of skids in the real swampy parts and you cant go fast because its so thick with bushes overgrown from the sides. I still have the stock gearing too and i barely feather the clutch...does the 400ex have reverse??? the z400 does and that will help you a lot! i've run into trees going downhill and have had to use reverse to turn around. it would be pretty hard to get out without it. my cousin even takes his 250r in there sometimes, hes got to feather the clutch like crazy and i can loose him pretty quick cuz hes using stalling or stuck trying to go offtrail to get around better LOL
