WTF was Honda thinking

Agreed, with proper maintenance drums work fine...they cant be that bad 1000's of tractor trailers on the road still use them!!!
Key to it is to check the seals, grease the seals and inspect the vent lines. Mine are 10 years old, see the worst kind of mud and work fine with lots of stopping power even towing heavy loads.

okay, i haven't found where anyone has replaced their drum brakes with disk brakes. well i went ahead and bought a kit to convert the front drums on my '04 foreman to disk. i can't really say how disk brakes work compared to the drums because the drums haven't worked for probably 2 years. i have a feeling my master cylinder is about shot cos i have to feather the handle a bit to really get the front brakes to grab. i will say that when they do grab, they grab hard. they'll lock up the front tires on gravel on a hard stop from about 25. consitering what i had before (nothing) i am happier than a pig in mud with the results.
the kit, once i threw out the destructions and downloaded them from another manufacurer with a similar design, was easier to install than falling off a log.
i would name names but i'm not sure how atvconection.com feels about advertising. i will say that there are 2 options, vented disk brakes and non vented. i opted for the non vented because i felt that the vents in the rotor would fill with mud and crap and pass that thru the brake pads and cause contamination.
