Default new 450r troubles!

hi i just bought a used 06 trx 450 and im having some troubles. I think the tranny oil is leaking, it seens to comming from a line with a t or something on it right about the tranny filler cap and behind the pipe. Im waiting for it to cool to see if its maybe to full. Also when i shut the quad off the pipe really makes little snapping noises, none of the other quads or bikes i have owned have done this. Also the airbox lid did notcome with it and i do some muddy riding so i ordered a new one, will i have to change the jetting? Also the bike came from florida and i live in canada, should i check the jetting or anything else because of the temp. difference? What other maintnence should i be doing regulary? Any replies are greatly appreciated.

P.S. sorry about the long post.

The snapping noise I would think might be the wrong jetting. You'll definately need to change it, due to the temp. and altitude change. Make sure to change the oil right away. You never know how the person maintained it, no matter what they tell you. You can guess by looking at the condition of the oil, how clean the filter is, oil filter. Take the airfilter all the way off and take a clean rag or cloth and wipe the inside of the boot. That's another way to see if they kept up on the airfilter maintainance. Keep an eye on the coolant level too. I'd reccomend changing it and putting engine ice in it. Works wonders. And keep up on your oil changes. It's an extra easy insurance to make sure that the engine will last. I change mine every 5-10 hours of riding. Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Im not sure what jetting you should use, because of the higher elevation. I haven't heard of e stock jetting before either. Just call a local dealer and see how they say it should be jetted. Also, make sure you don't use the same kind of oil when filling both sides up. I use golden spectro SAE 80 wet clutch on the tranny side, and 10w40 on the other, also Golden Spectro. Look up old threads on 450R oils, there a ton of responses from others, with their expirences and so forth.

nogamesjoe I pretty sure that the 04 and 05's did not not have the unicam engines in them and the newer one do. I think thats about the only difference, and the optional elec. start

There are many differences from '04-'05 to '06-'07.

'05 carb. is 42mm QA16A; '06 is 40mm FCR10A for ER, FCR11A for R

'05 main jet is 118, slow jet is 48; '06 main jet is 120, slow jet is 42, starter jet is 75

'05 bore x stroke is 94mm x 64.8mm (449.7 cc); '06 is 96mm x 62.1mm (449.4 cc)

'05 has an oil cooler, '06 does not

'05 compression is 10.5:1; '06 is 12.0:1

There are different spark plugs, too. The two motors are very different, and very few parts are interchangable. Even the gear ratios are different.

Joe,

Glad to help! The specs are right out of the Honda Factory Service Manual. They're not secrets...

I may not be the best source for advice about how to spend ~$400. I spent well over that on mine with Ice Cube parts. However, any internal combustion engine will respond to basic hop-up items that allow it to breathe better.

Things like a better intake and exhaust system are usually money well spent. Regardless, if you do any mods, check the jetting! As the saying goes, 'The only time you need to rejet is when you need to rejet'.

Good luck!
