2004 450r water pump bearing and seal install
#1
hey guys ,
a friend of mine dropped off his 450 . the right side crank case was cracked.
he brought me the new case and oil seals and bearings. i looked on line at the parts micro film and it doesn't look the same for the water pump.. doesnt one oil seal go on the inside and then the bearing and then the shaft next. then what goes next on the out side the oil seal first?the oil seal looks to small.plus it doesnt show the other seal that is spring loaded?looks like if you put a seal on the outside it will cover the hole?? i have put them on my ds and the seals go back to back over the weep hole. thanks in advance

I almost was confused reading this.
The spring loaded seal is called a ceramic seal. That seal goes on the outside of the case with the spring facing the waterpump impiller. The bearing goes in behind it. The normal looking seal is drove in next from tha backside of the case. Take note that is installed the right way. The lips of the seal face toward the inside of the cover, not toward the bearing or ceramic seal. The shaft slips through from the inside of the case and the impiller bolted to it.
If a small seal was purchased, Look at the back side of the water pump impiller. That seal may go in there ?

i found out what the problem was . the one seal on the outside the "mechanical seal" with the spring was missing the bottom seal that is made on it. he brought it to me apart and it didnt have the seal on the bottom of it. the part looks like a regular oil seal on the parts list..the guy at the yamaha shop didnt order that seal.it was $42!! thanks again, james
