i just bought a 1987 250x and it ticks in the top end and burns oil like crazy what could be wrong thanks

 

Welcome to the forums...Well with an old quad like that I would say that you are going to need a rebuild on the top end...If it is smoking I would say oil is getting past the rings and hence the reason for the loss of oil...The noise on the top end could either be the valves ticking or the chain for the cam and crank...I would take the top end apart and inspect everything since it is old and I am sure it is due for a rebuild, so just take a look.

 

I have a trx 250x 1991 and it had alot od problems. Most likely as it is an older atv you need a new timing chain. Probably some new valves too.I had to replace two of my valves cause it jumped time. so check the timing chain and see what happens

 

thanks for the posts, i just had a new timing chain put in a month ago do you guys know were to get a cheap rebuild kit and valves, there on ebay and the rebuild is $200 same price for the valves thats pretty steep for used valves, thanks again for the posts
