we have a 2002 honda 250 es atv, problem is sometimes it will idle norma and then it will start getting faster and faster of a idle. thanksl

 

I don't know if you mean just sitting there it will start revving up or if you ride and idle gets higher then ride some more and higher yet.

If It increases with riding i would remove the cable and check to see if it moves freely. Sometimes they get burs or borken wires inside the cable that cause them to hang.
If just sitting there you can here it rise it may be an air leak somewhere.

Those machines came from the factory extremely lean on the air fuel mixture.
If your familiar with the air/fuel mixture screw, an adjustment should take care of your problem. To adjust, get engine to full operating temperature, attach a tachometer if you have one, otherwise listen very carefully to the engine, turn the a/f screw in until the engine drops about 50 RPM then slowly turn the a/f screw out till it reachs it maximum rpm reset idle to specified RPM, repeat the above procedure, then when you have found maximum RPM the second time, turn the a/f screw out an additional 1/2 turn, reset idle speed to spec, and your done.

Hi Honda Technician. I currently own a 2006 Honda Rubicon that has cold start problems. Even in the summer, it seems harder to start than it should be. It seems to idle low too. Should I look at making the same adjustments? Any other things I should be looking for?

Well I have never saw one of those with a cold start problem, the things to check on it are, Idle speed, which if memory serves my correctly should be about 1400 RPM, check free play in the choke cable(which is not really a choke at all, its a fuel enriching circuit) if there is to much free play in that cable you will be lean at cold start up. Normally those carbs dont require any adjustment from the factory.
I am assuming that the breather is clean and oiled properly.

I forgot to mention, sometimes on the choke cable, the tensioner is not set properly and after you pull up the choke, it will slip back in on its own.
There is an adjustment for that just below the **** you pull up on... its under the bellows seal. Turn clockwise to tighten and that will stop the **** from slipping back in during starting.

 

Honda technician thanks for the info you was right about the problem with my ATV. I did exactly what you said to do and it worked. This is the best this ATV has ever run since the day it was new. I thought it was something inside the carbrator and I was going to tear it apart and clean it. Thanks to you I didn't . I really apprecate your help.




If anybody out there has any problems with there ATV this is man that can give you the answers.
