when the starter button is engaged on my rancher 350 (2002) i just get a clicking in the solenoid beside the battery. bad solenoid? bad battery?

If the solenoid is clicking, it is probably ok, I would have a look at the starter, may need brushes. If the battery was really low it could cause the same problem, try jumping it from a known good battery and if no cranking, check starter.
Also make sure the heavy wire from the solenoid to the starter is in good shape and connected.
