STUCK FRONT WHEEL HUB
#1
I HAVE A 1986 HONDA 2 WD ATV. MY RIGHT FRONT WHEEL LOCKED UP RECENTLY AND I AM HAVING NO LUCK GETTING MY FRONT WHEEL HUB OFF.
( FROZE UP ) I HAVE TRIED PENETRATEING OIL AND PECKING WITH A HAMMER.
ANY SUGGESTIONS ON GETTING IT OFF WITHOUT TEARING IT UP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

DKP4197 it would help if you could give us a little more info like the model number : is it a TRX 250 ? I will take a stab in the dark here and say you have a 1986 Honda TRX 250 2wd quad , and the reason i ask is they're not all the same when it come's pulling the hub ! I had a 1986 Honda TRX 350 Foreman full time 4x4 that i had the same problem with getting the hub's off to install new brake's , in fact if my memory serve's me right my 350 had one or two screw's with bolt like head's on them that helped hold the hub's to the spindle's ; how ever this may not be the case with your 250 2wd ! But in any case you have to knock them off with a big rubber mallet type hammer , don't use a steel hammer head or you wil brake the hub's if they are aluminum like my 350 was ; even after i removed the screw's i had to really bang on them hard in a criscros pattern to get them off i've heard of people using a small block of wood and using a short handled dead blow or sledge hammer , but i found a large rubber mallet is the safest way to go and i didn't think i would get them off but i just kept right on banging away untill they came off ; and i did spray them with WD40 and liquid wrench before i started knocking them loose ! If you do it this way it should come off , and if they were like mine it was a mess of rusty part's in there even though these drum's are suppose to be sealed muddy water get's in them somehow ; anyway good luck and let us know how thing's turned out ! .............

THAT WAS A VERY GOOD GUESS. IT IS A TRX-250 2WD.(AN OLD BIKE I KEEP AT THE CAMP FOR HUNTING, SO TOOLS ARE LIMITED )MINE DOESN'T HAVE THE SCREWS ON THE HUB ? I'LL GET A MALLET AND BEAT SOME MORE.
THANKS

Have you checked the brakes? My dad's 04' did the same thing after I rode it hard one weekend...turned out the drums rusted/corroded just enough to lock 'em up. after using the adjusting port and releasing the brakes, it came off easily. Good luck.

DKP4197 You're welcome and that is what i thought the case might be , my Intertec Maual secind addition didn't show the screws either in fact it doesn't even show a diagram of the brake's inter part's like a good O.E.M. or Haynes shop manual does ; but you'll be on the right track with the big rubber mallet it woked great for me ! There shound be or they did on my 350 a large round shaped o'ring type rubber gasket that fit's in a groove manchined in the drum that's suppose to seal the drum from getting water, sand and Dirt into the drum but it still get's in anyway ; and there should be a rubber plug at the bottom of the backing plate you can remove to check for water in the drum ! My local Honda Dealer told me that you should remove the brake drum's for inpection and cleaning just as you would to the cleaning of the outside of your quad to keep the brakes form rusting up by water ,sand and dirt that can get in by way of worn seal's and gasket's ; and cleaning the brake's with a good brake cleaning solution like the kind you can get at all automotive supply store's like Auto Zone , Advance and O'Reillys Auto Parts Stores ! And member : 12guns is right if your brakes on the TRX 250 are infact locked up you wouldn't be able to rotate/turn the drum even with the wheel on the quad , if there is an adjusting port ( whitch some of the honda's do and some don't ) have this feature then you could try adjusting while still banging on the drums in a crisscross pattern ( By crisscross pattern i mean the way way you tiighten and torque the lug nut's on the wheel of a car or atv ) with the rubber mallet this will help loosen the brake's as well as removing the brake drum ! Keep us inforned of you progress and success in removing the drum , it with help other's who may run into this type of situation and the cure for success ; and let me add this side note to this reply a good O.E.M. , Haynes or Chilton manual that goes in deep detail of the the Brand Make and Model of the ATV you have is the best investment you can make for your quad and Autotombile's as well ! They will pay for themselves with just one full servicing and tune up ! .......
