I have a 250X and am going to MX race and I have racing plastic and 22 inch tires all around, the front are Holeshots. Why are all the racers using small tires and what good does it do,add power? Why don't they leave the big ones on and they can run everyone over? What other mods should I do to race 4-stroke MX,in most importance? Thanks guys!

You don't need as much top speed for this kind of racing, you do need stablity and a quick takeoff. That's what small profile tires do for you.

The truth is that MX racers use small tires because they cannot afford full size 22 inch tires. They are on a strict budget, seeing as atv racing does not get the publicity, sponsors, and money of other sports. So when you see one of these poor racers, be kind, ask them if they are hungry and would like a sandwhich perhaps...

nice reply 300ex, im sure that just because there isnt much cash in atv racing the racers 15,000+ bikes and sponsers have more then enough cash for the tires, i agree with the frist response

Here are some reasons why MXers use smaller tires.

[OL][*]Less weight[*]You don't need lots of ground clearance for MX[*]Better sidewall strength

the reasons are to make a low center of gravity and because of that they dont tip as much.

by puting smaller tires they are effectively lowering the gearing, making the quad accelerate better. why not just drop a tooth on the front sproket you ask? smaller tires give a better weight saving along with all the other advantages listed above. for mxing you will want to get a high compression piston, a hotter cam, a freeer flowing exaust, and a rev-limiter. these are known as the 4 main mods for a 4-stroke and are a good starting point. if you are still down on power bore the sucker out. good luck and hope i helped ya!
