93' fourtrax rear bearings location
#1
So I'm finally done w/ the front end, on to the rear...I pulled the axle, real nasty. The backing plate for brakes is off, knocked the bearings out of it w/ little problems. Question is where are the other set of bearings? Possibly on the inside of the diff? How will I know exactly how deep to press in the new bearings in the backing plate? Seems like there about 1.5 inches and they could set anywhere, but I know they must line up w/ the stop on the axle. How bout the other set, How to I get to them? Pull the diff loose from the hitch? Little help would be great.
Oh, yeah, thanks to this site, I adjusted the valves today and got rid of that annoying knocking!!

The other two axle bearings actually support the ring gear,..which is spline fitted to the axle. And it will require disassembly. A tip,..dont bother replacing those bearings unless you change the pinion bearings as well. Replacing only one of the two sets will only cause premature failure of the ones you are replacing.

The backing plate bearing should be approx. 10-11 mm inside the bearing hole that leaves room for the seal which goes in flush .. As far as the rear differential bearings go they can be changed but if there is dirt/mud/water/rust in the rear end then all the bearings should be changed pinion bearings to .. Changing the pinion bearings require special tools ..

I can't begin to tell you guys how much help you are. I'll replace the backing plate bearings and not mess w/ the diff bearings for now. They seem to be tight on the axle, and to be honest w/ you I don't want to dig into it. This thing should last a couple more years w/ the work I've done, If more work is needed in the future, I'll take care of it then. Thanks again for all your help!
