well i would say if u dont want to spend to much buy some wheel spaces or some +2 a arms from housin and a +2 axle the a arms are about 600 and an axle u can find for about 2-3 humdred or u cam allways get the wheel spacers and if u want some hp gain or to go faster jet it and put an exhaust or if the track isint to long gear it down

If I was you, I would convert the 450 to use on the track and set up the 400 up for the woods. If you are set on making the 400 your track bike, watch Ebay for extended a-arms and extended axles, a good set of used aftermarket shocks, and an exhaust. Then sell the stock parts to help pay for the MX parts. I just did this with my YFZ and ended up with houser a-arms, TCS shocks, and lonestar axle, that set me back $275, after I sold the original parts.
You also, should really add a set of nerfbars and a tether switch for safety.

well i race the 450r in compitition thats the reason a dished out the $6500 and got the shocks rebuild and valved and hyper wheels.......i retired the 400ex from that and its not worth it for me to sell it and it just sits. im not looking to race on a track just go to one every once in awhile. i have a exhaust jet kit kandn air filter. so power isnt a problem......yet but just lookin for handeling

i want to get used parts like shocksa arms maby a plus swinger and axle, im going to tear it down over the winter and rebuild it using used ebay parts but not quite sure whats better for mx. like making it too low or too tall and even going plus 1-2" foward and 1-2" longer in the rear. what size tires and type, rims offset. and other odds and ends. i dont have a set budget because its a winter project so it wont be one lump sum. thanks Joe

You will want to make the bike fairly low in stance to make it corner the best(I like to run zero preload). You will probably want +2+1 front a-arms(you will probably need extended tie rods and brake lines), 10" front wheels(.190 or better with standard offset), 8" rear wheels (.190 or better with standard offset), 20" front and 18" rear tires (Maxxis Razr MX or ITP Holeshot MX), +4 axle, and gearing to match the smaller tires. The stock swingarm will probably work all right for you. Unless if you have problems with it wheelying, I would wait on it.

.125 wheels will bend if you hit a jump wrong or land hard. I would skip the trx450 shocks, they are too soft for MX. I would find another brand of aftermarket shocks designed for the 400. Here are some Ohlins that I figure will go cheap: Ohlins shocks They arent in perfect shape, but they should be decent shocks.
