The 1985 Honda TRX125 is equipped with a charging circuit which consists of an alternator charge coil located underneath the flywheel , a voltage regulator and battery. Standard battery is a YB9A-A with a 9 ampere hour , 12 volt rating. Under load the
alternator should produce 12 volts and 70 watts at 5000 rpm !

I'm not sure if it would fire without a good battery , my manual doesn't say it will or not ; but i would get a battery to try it for sure ! ......

I've got an 86 that is a mess, but runs. Has no battery, and the headlight even works at higher throttle. Check your CDI or voltage to the primary side of the coil.

I have an 86 TRX 125 that I just picked up from my dad's last week. It's my old bike from my younger years and I want to restore it. I ran into the same problem. I don't have a battery. The neutral light would turn green when you pulled the recoil starter, but no spark.

Will your neural light turn green when you pull the recoil starter?

Also, I'm sure you have checked, but if you haven't, check the 7amp fuse near the air box.

My problem ended up being a short in the lights, cutoff, electric start package on the left handlebar.

Just to note, this machine hasn't cranked in 8 years and once I had a spark and changed the gas, it cranked on first pull and idled fine. Amazing.

Over the next few months I plan on fixing this thing up right.

Also, you might want to check ebay for used parts. There are lots of people parting out these machines and you can get a good deal on parts.

I am having the same problem it seems. I got this old 85ish TRX125 for $100, in rough condition. It sparks ONE time once in a while, but won't do more than that. It has power at the coil, but something is not happening. I took the side cover off today for inspection but did not see anything abnormal. Could someone tell me the best way to test the Ign pickup (CDI?) I have access to an oscilliscope, so I can check waveforms if required. I just don't have any wiring diagrams or resistance tests I can do, because I have not found info on the internet, and to be honest I don't want to buy a manual for an ATV I'm not even sure I can drive. (It needs a lot of other stuff too...).

Thanks, hope I'm not threadjacking.
