Can a Hondamatic Survive a blown engine?
#1
I have a rubicon and I'm pretty sure i need a new hondamatic. I can get one out of a quad that had 1800 miles on it but the engine blew up!
This there a chance that the tranny is still good? Is there a way to tell by looking at it or just putting it in a trying it out?

Filings won't hurt a regular gear type 5 speed transmission , just clean the gears in varasol/contact cleaner then re-assemble onto the mainshaft and countershaft pop on new bearings and it's good as new .. Unfortunally the Hondamatic isn't that simple it's a sealed unit once filings get inside the hydrostatic pump it's impossible to 100% clean ...

Hey HondaMechanic..... Those pics help...... and that oil pump is inside the middle of the engine?? Seems like a pain to change...... Once i get the hondamatic out.... is there any way to tell if its bad or what part went bad by just looking at it?? Or since its sealed can i only tell if it doesnt work by how it performs in the bike??
Thanks yet again!!

If i take apart the engine and get to the oil pump can i tell if it is in fact bad?? Just curious because it was gonna cost me about 60 buck to get it tested and only 120 something for a new pump..... so if it was bad it costs me almost 200 bucks but if i just replace it and its not bad i only overspend a little.....
so can you tell if its bad once its out of the engine?
