I live in Indiana, and I was wondering if anyone new, or knows where to find if it is legal to ride on rock roads.I know some counties alow it and some don't. Please respond if you know anything about it. Don't reply unless you have good positive information, I don't want cut downs, I ride with my helmet, and I don't ride stupid. So help if you can. Thanks.

I used to live in Pike county south of Petersburg. It was legal there to ride on secondary roads. A lot of the rural areas are ok with it if you are legally registered and showing your numbers. Your best bet is to contact local county police and ask them. They can tell you for sure. They can also tell you what happens if you do it anyways. Everywhere I have been around Indiana, they don't say much if you are driving responsibly. I think this is in part because a lot of farmers use them.

By the way, where do you ride down there?

Yo I am from Lebanon Indiana (between indy and lafayette) and I have heard that if you go to the liscence branch you can "country register" your quad and what happens is you can ride outside of the city limits. My neighbors seem to care, cops over here alot. haha "wasn't me officer"

Here is a link to the State of Indiana law reguarding ATV use on public roads.
http://www.ai.org/legislative/ic/cod.../ar16/ch1.html
But be advised that counties and towns can add more restrictions to this. Where I live the city law states that you must be 18 years of age and must stay off of main roads but apperently side streets and suchs are ok.
Down by where my folks live you can ride ATVs all over town, but 10 miles away in another town you will get a ticket no matter what road you ride on. To avoid the most problems you need to fill out and send in a DNR ATV registration and display the reg number on the front of your ATV. Then contact your local city and county law enforcement agencies for thier respective laws. The DNR reg will be required no matter what and it will help you get out of trouble if it atleast looks like you tried to comply with all the rules you can. My son and I were unaware of the local city rule reguaring the manditory 18 years of age and no main road law untill we were stopped by the police one evening riding home for a local riding area. I really think the fact that I was aware of the State Regs and had the DNR numbers on both Quads kept us from getting in any trouble. The officer seemed quite shocked when I started quoting the State Regs and how we were infact in compliance. He just told us to stay off the main roads and be on our merry way :-)

Well for the one guy that asked, I live in Dubois, but I ride in both Pike and Dubois. I know in Pike it is okay, but I didn't know if Dubois has changed. I am 18, and I have my DNR thing.(Numbers) I don't have them on the quad(I should but I can't see doing it to my 400ex)but I do carry them with me when I ride. Thanks for the info.:-)

Just to talk abou tthe thing you have to show in front of the quad...I guess it's a license plate. If they aren't too big, I saw a guy with a nice setup about this. He attached his plate with tieraps at the frame tubes behind the bumper (under the plastic nose). It couls be seen whe nlooking for it, but not too bad looking...just an idea...I was surprised when I saw that since abot everyone has it in the rear here. Looks cool for a plated machine.

Here it does not have to be a license plate, the law states it just has to be 3 inch high letters that are easily seen on the front of the Quad. Most people here use sticky numbers directly on the Quad fenders.
