putting cam chain on and it turns when i turn crank,chain looks to be about 1/4 inch short to get it back on the cam new chain whats up thanks gary

That is strange. Is it a replacement chain ? Count the links on the origional if so and make sure the same pin number is accounted for.
I have also seen where the chain guide slips up and out of place and hits on the side of the chain. Just to clairify, are you turning the notch of the gear the right way to slip the chain over it, then set the gear on the cam ?
