help needed

Hi, I just receiveda 1986 honda 125 trx fourtrax from my sister. I had a 1986 200 sx years ago but forget about the oil and such. I want to change the oil in the motor and transmission so i can get to using this quad around my yard. I am thinking now that possibly the same oil might run both the engine and transmission and that they are not separate. Any help would be appreciated.
What kind of oil etc and if they are sparate or not. thanks in advance

Correct, the engine and trans share the same oil bath. Also, this engine doesnt use an oil filter. As for oil, the choices of what would be "ok" are endless, but the Honda GN4 will be plenty fine if you have a Honda dealer nearby. That engine holds right at a quart of oil last I remember. Prices on the GN4 can vary from 2.50 to 4.50 a quart depending on the dealer's markup. If you dont have the owner's manual, the dealer can look up the exact oil quanity for you.

Good article on oil for quads/motorcycles: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm
Your oil has to do double duty, getting thrashed in a transmission as well as lubing an engine. So, it needs special additives! Pick a motorcycle oil that is API SG/JASO MA.
For an old machine like that, I would probably run Maxima Premium (an economically priced petroleum oil with a monster additive package) or if I couldn't find that, then Honda GN4 or maybe Yamalube.
